Maxine was born behind a butcher’s counter in the village square. Fat, wet with gore, was her first pillow. She suckled through a cleft lip while her mother slaughtered living creatures, twisting the necks of chickens, swinging the axe at the heart of a cat who caught a claw on baby’s cheek and administered that famous tear.

When Max was old enough to feed herself she licked at raw scraps that clung to warm bones. She bit her fingernails to points and clawed out the rat’s black eyes.
